Australian Technology Park brings innovation to CeBIT

Showcasing the Australian Technology Park’s compelling fusion of technology, innovation and community, ATP Innovations and client companies ActionHRM, AIMEDICS and Netleverage joined forces on the Australian Technology Park (ATP) stand at the recent CeBIT Australia 2012 exhibition.

  • ActionHRM presented its fully integrated online software-as-a-service HR Management solution for small and midsize businesses that increase productivity, reduce costs and improve compliance.
  • AMEDICS gained valuable exposure on the eve of the UK launch of Hypomon, the world’s first non-invasive medical monitoring device for Type I diabetes.

Mobile Commerce (mCommerce) Trends and Innovations

Jackie Taranto, Managing Director of the region’s largest business event, CeBIT Australia, believes mCommerce will open new doors for retailers as mobile and tablet device users are both plentiful and demographically diverse.

“Consumers use mobile and wireless devices as part of their day-to-day life. The technology that is now available to owners of these devices has paved the way for unique brand experiences when utilised appropriately by organisations,” said Ms. Taranto.

Despite the hype surrounding the m-commerce revolution, some consumers have concerns about the regulation of these devices and what it means for the protection of their identity and finances.

“Converging media always poses new threats and challenges for providers and consumers. The difficulty will be maintaining the proper degree of regulation as the technology continues to improve” said Ms. Taranto.

“Customers now demand 24/7 marketplaces and the next 12 months will see more and more retailers using m-commerce to ensure customers can buy, whenever, wherever.”

Survivor: CIO Edition

CA technologies recently released a report ‘The Future Role of the CIO’ which highlights that Australian CIOs believe cloud computing can position them to be CEOs.

Interestingly 57% of Australian CIO’s surveyed believe that cloud computing is shifting their focus away from technology onto vital business services, increasing their chances of promotion to CEO.

However on a cautionary note, although 70% of Australian CIOs feel ideally positioned to move specifically to the CEO role the reality is 4% of current global CEOs have risen to this role after previously being a CIO.

“There’s no doubt that cloud computing is revolutionising business particularly in these strained economic times. But it’s also breeding a new type of technology leader – one who understands that by using the cloud to innovate, increase speed to market and reduce costs in providing strategic business services, he or she will be in a position to make a significant impact on the business and potentially be positioned to lead it,” said Bill McMurray, Managing Director at CA Technologies Australia & New Zealand.

Martin Retschko, National Practice Director, Hudson ICT commented on the report stating that the:

“Role of the CIO is no longer purely about technology. In Australia, we are seeing that this position is evolving from the traditionally technical role of a CIO to one that is more strategic and business focused.”

“CIOs that show an understanding of, and commitment to developing the business, are much more likely to evolve beyond their traditional role”.

Andi Mann, vice president of Strategic Solutions at CA Technologies has an interesting related perspective, feeling that CIO’s need to become a trusted advisor because companies today are quick to eliminate positions that don't add value.

By Andi Mann, vice president of Strategic Solutions at CA Technologies

I keep hearing how cloud computing will kill the CIO. Articles, posts, and tweets claim "the CIO is dead," done in by SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, virtualization, and the increasing commoditization of IT resources. IT budgets are being cut (again!), but IT spending overall is going up, according to both IDC and Gartner.

Smart Cities: City of Sydney LED Lighting Rollout

Sydney has become the first city in Australia to roll-out new energy-efficient LED street and park lights. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the rollout of LED lights, following a successful 18 month trial in Alexandria Park, Kings Cross, Martin Place and Circular Quay, would reduce emissions and halve the energy use.

“Replacing 6,450 conventional lights will save nearly $800,000 a year in electricity bills and maintenance costs,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Sydney will be the first city in Australia to install the new LED street and park lights across its entire city centre, and joins other major cities such as Berlin, Barcelona, Los Angeles and San Francisco.”

A joint venture of GE and UGL Limited (UGL), selected by tender, has begun installing the first batch of new LED lights on George Street, in front of Sydney Town Hall as part of a $7 million three year project.
