About Mathew Smorhun

Mr Mathew Smorhun joined the Department of Defence in November 2011 after leading commercial negotiations for the ATO’s outsourcing program in 2009/10.

Matt currently leads the ICT Strategy Realisation Branch (ICTSRB) and has responsibility for ensuring successful implementation of Defence ICT strategies for major programs of work and business as usual activities.

Matt holds a critical role within the ICT planning function for Defence, it includes oversight of the strategic portfolio management office, cross departmental and interagency governance, business case development, ownership of the overall ICT strategy and enterprise policy outcomes. Matt is also leading the departments Enterprise Information Management program of work.

Matt graduated from the University of Canberra in 2004 and prior to joining the Department of Defence worked in the private sector in tax accountancy and then in a number of ICT commercial and transformation roles at the Australian Taxation Office.

During his time with Defence, Matt has led the groups commercial functions, and was responsible for driving strategic commercial and contract management outcomes for CIOG for a number of major programs including data centre outsourcing and network replacement.

Recently Matt spent six months working in the UK as part of an industry placement with a large accounting firm engaged on a number of major programs with the UK Ministry of Defence.

He is married with a daughter, is an avid Australian Rules Football supporter and a one eyed Sydney Swans fan.
