About Darren Kane

Darren Kane is the Chief Security Officer of nbn™ Australia. At nbn, the goal is to deliver Australia's first national wholesale-only, open access broadband network. Darren’s role has an accountability to oversee the continuous monitoring and protection of facilities, personnel and information systems. Evaluating suspected security breaches and recommending corrective actions (including incidents involving outside vendors) for Australia's biggest infrastructure project.

Darren also has a responsibility for developing and maintaining a Centre of Excellence for security advice and security policy which is driven throughout the enterprise.

Prior to nbn, Darren served 13 years with the Australian Federal Police obtaining the rank of Detective Sergeant and then joined ASIC in 1998, obtaining the position Assistant Director of National Enforcement. Darren moved to Telstra in 2004 and held the positions of Group Manager of Regulatory and Agency Liaison and General Manager of Security Operations, before becoming Director, Corporate Security & Investigations in 2009. Darren held the latter role for approximately five years.

Darren was also Telstra's inaugural Officer of Internet Trust & Safety, building Telstra’s commitment to the education and support programs relevant to the growing awareness of potential online risks and coordinating cyber-safety response for all Telstra's products and services. As part of this role, Darren was appointed to various boards and committees including the Federal Government’s Consultative Working Group on Cyber-Safety in 2008 and in January 2012 he accepted a position to the Board of CrimeStoppers (NSW). He stood down from this Board role in February 2014.
