IBM Says New Power Servers Will Outperform Sun, HP
9 Feb 2010

IBM has launched its next generation Power servers, catering to the intermediary segment between powerful mainframe computers and lower end X86 based servers.
IBM's Power7 processors are designed to run demanding applications such as real-time analytics and smart electrical grids.
The new Power7 system chip has eight cores that can each run four threads, compared to the maximum two cores running two threads in the Power6 range.
Some versions further come with a 'TurboCore' mode that deactivates four of the cores and provides the maximum cache memory and memory bandwidth to the remaining four, as well as increasing their clock speed.
The Power7 system comes complete with new microporcessors, storage and middleware, allowing it to process more data than its predecessor.
"The innovation starts at the chip level," said Ross Mauri, general manager of IBM Power systems.
"And they can dynamically adjust their own electrical usage based on the workload."
The Power 750 Express is aimed at midmarket customers and IBM claims that it delivers ten times the performance of the HP Integrity rx6600, and is three times as energy efficient as the Sun SPARC Enterprise T5440.
IBM’s foray into the software market has pitted it against industry leaders HP and Oracle, which recently bought Sun Microsystems.
"IBM is transforming itself to software and services company. But hardware still plays a very big part of the business because it allows them to wrap everything into one big bundle. You can get your hardware, services, and software in one place," said Andy Miedler, Edward Jones analyst.
Analysts also say that IBM is facing increased competition from Cisco Systems as it expands into the servers and software market.
