Green Grid Develop Data Centre Efficiency Tools

5 Feb 2010

In an effort to create stronger incentives for data centre operators to increase their facilities’ energy efficiency, the Green Grid Consortium is set release two free energy measurement tools in March.

The Green Grid's Power Efficiency Estimator enables data centre operators to compare different possible situations involving power technologies and technology within their facilities.

"It's a tool that lets you specify the topology of your power distribution network at a high level, including how it is architected, what connects to what, and what type of equipment you are using," said John Pflueger, a Green Grid board member who is also the chairman of its technical group and a technology strategist with Dell.

"The tool will have statistics about all the various equipment. It then applies some math according to the topology and comes back with a curve for your power distribution network, to tell you what sort of efficiency you might expect for that network as a percentage of load," he said.

The second tool, the Power Usage Effectiveness Calculator, further allows managers to easily input their facilities’ specific data at regular intervals to determine their power usage effectiveness (PUE).

It then compares it to the amount of power that actually reaches the IT equipment, as opposed to being used for cooling systems or wasted in inefficient power supplies

The tools are both accessible online through the Green Grid’s website.

The Green Grid Consortium, was set up three years ago to develop tools and recommendations for improving data centre efficiency and is made up of a mix of vendor companies and end-users.
