Google Releases Open Source Development Toolbox

12 Nov 2009

Google has opened the source code of its comprehensive JavaScript library collection that it uses in a number of popular web applications such as Gmail, Google Docs and Google Maps.

The source code of its own JavaScript compression tools has also been released.

The internet giant has released this information in the hope that it will prove useful for external programmers looking to build faster Web applications.

"By enabling and allowing developers to use the very same tools that Google uses, we hope that they can not only build rich applications but also make the Web really, really fast. That's our primary motive in getting these tools outside to the global community," said Google product manager, Amit Agarwal.

Google has specifically released a compiler, library and set of templates it calls Closure Tools.

The tools are designed to make the job of building and maintaining the notoriously complicated JavaScript quicker and easier.

Included in the tools is Closure Compiler which removes dead code and consolidates working code for JavaScript to run faster, even for users with slow connections.

Closure Library is also included in the tools, which is a JavaScript library containing a set of standard application services and components that run across different browsers.

Google is also making available Closure Templates, designed to automate the dynamic creation of HTML.

This release is similar to Google offering Google Web Toolkit (GWT), which allowed developers to build JavaScript applications in Java. Closure Tools is instead designed for JavaScript.
