Cloud Computing Attractive to CIOs and CFOs
20 Jan 2010

Cloud computing is not only the future of technology, but is also finding favour in the finance department as organisations focus their attentions on the financial management of IT.
Analyst group Gartner has found that CIOs working to return to business growth have made technologies such as virtualisation, cloud computing, Web 2.0, networking and mobility top priorities in 2010.
Gartner said that 2010 will be a “transition” year for the IT department, with economies moving from recession to recovery without expanding IT budgets.
While CIOs focused on efficiency in 2009, this year will see the strategic focus shift to enhancing productivity.
Gartner VP Mark MacDonald said that companies are making a transition from owner-sourced technologies to lightweight social technologies.
"The degree to which cloud computing and Web 2.0 rocketed to the top of CIO priorities is significant. We have been surveying for them since 2007, and they were always on the list, but way down. These technologies don't require a huge upfront investment, but in some cases, promise significant benefits," he said.
CIOs are attracted to Web 2.0 technologies both internally for improving collaboration within an organisation, and externally for engaging with wider groups of stakeholders in new ways.
"Even though revenue was down in 2009, CIOs reported that transaction volumes and communications requirements continued to grow, making it imperative to focus on network technologies," Mr McDonald said.
