Cisco High-Speed Broadband Announcement Expected
26 Feb 2010

Cisco Systems will reportedly unveil a plan to work with service providers to build ultrafast broadband networks that can run a 1G bps.
The report comes as Cicso has invited media and analysts to a webcast event on Tuesday March 9, during which the company said it would make a “significant announcement” to “forever change the Internet and its impact on consumers, business and governments.”
If verified, Cisco’s move would be similar to Google’s recent announcement to build broadband networks that run at 1G bps in various regions in the US.
Cisco has declined to comment on its plans, but said that the US "needs high-speed, future-proof broadband networks that are accessible and affordable to all.”
It also said that the company "looks forward to being part of this exciting transformation."
The Financial Times and Reuters have quoted sources saying that Cisco would work with ISPs, many of which are Cisco customers.
This would differ the networking giant’s plans to those of Google, which is looking to directly challenge established service providers such as AT&T and Verizon.
The need for high speed broadband is high on the international agenda this year, with the Obama Government designating over US$7 billion for broadband projects, and the Australian Federal Government overseeing the roll out of the National Broadband Network.
