Telstra Boosts Tasmanian Jobs

8 Feb 2010

As part of its multi-million dollar HQ refurbishment, Telstra has announced it will boost its call centre capacity in Hobart.

The Tasmanian Government said that the national telco will add 120 positions to bring its workforce up to 200.

The move comes as Telstra closes down its call centre operations in the Northern Territory as part of a national restructure.

Telstra spokesperson Craig Middleton said that the move comes as the company faced recruiting problems in the Northern Territory, making consolidating jobs in Tasmania the “logical solution.”

"I commend Telstra for their display of confidence in the Tasmanian economy and call centre industry and wish them every success with their expanded operations in the state," Tasmanian Deputy Premier Lara Giddings said in a statement.

“Telstra is a major employer within Tasmania and an essential contributor to the telecommunications infrastructure within our State,” she said.

“Today, more than 5000 people are employed in the call centre industry in the state and this expansion will attract more skilled workers to the State.”

Grant Wiltshire from Telstra Country Wide says the company can attract more skilled workers in Hobart.

"The Hobart Centre is one of our top performing centres nationally and we had the capability as part of our multi-million dollar announcement late last year to expand, so we've got the capacity for a 200 seat centre," he said.
