NSW and Victoria Reform Data Centres

30 Oct 2009

NSW Government

The NSW Government has called for two purpose-built green data centres to be developed and run by the private sector, while the Victorian Government has given advance notice for a tender it will release on 18 November for whole-of-government data centre facilities.

Over 30 agencies supporting dozens of data centres are currently in use by the NSW Government, which plans to move them all into the two efficient facilities by 2011.

The request for tender will be released in early 2010, and will be issued as a 10 year contract, with two blocks of five year extensions for the design, construction and maintenance of the facilities.

The NSW Government’s new consolidated and more efficient facilities will reduce the cost of data centre operation, as well as being more ecological and improving reliability, security and capacity.

The location for the data centres remains unconfirmed, but areas of low electricity cost and temperatures such as the Hunter Valley, Illawarra, Goulbourn/ACT border and Bathurst/Orange/Blue Mountains, have been proposed.

The Federal Government has also been working on a whole-of-government data centre strategy to consolidate the 45 data centres outside of Defence which the government operates.

The first set of speakers for CeBIT Australia’s 2010 Future-Proofing Your Data Centre Conference has been confirmed. Senior IT executives from The National Australia Bank, The Australian Geothermal Energy Group, Server Racks Australia, and other experts will examine how to optimise your data centre needs for future growth.
