Gov 2.0 Taskforce Motivates ACMA Social Media Strategy
29 Jan 2010

The Government 2.0 Taskforce may have officially ended as of 31 December 2009, but its work continues as the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) said it took the advice of the Taskforce in its latest hire.
Tom Burton, former Sydney Morning Herald executive editor and ministerial adviser to former Communications Minister, Michael Duffy is now in charge of helping ACMA better engage with the public.
ACMA was particularly influenced by the Gov 2.0 Taskforce final report in deciding how to engage the public and provide access to government processes and information.
"I was particularly impressed by the recent report of the Government 2.0 Taskforce. It provides a comprehensive blueprint for the implementation of Gov 2.0 principles and practices,” ACMA chief Chris Chapman said in a statement.
“The Report has been internationally recognised for its holistic and considered approach to the use of new media tools to genuinely engage with users."
Burton will primarily use new technologies such as social media apps and social networking tools, to improve the agency’s engagement and external communications with stakeholders.
"For some time I have been conscious of the importance of using the many new applications to improve the ACMA's stakeholder engagement and external communications, both domestically and internationally," said Mr Chapman.
The Gov 2.0 Taskforce report notes the Federal Government agencies "must do better" to achieve the Government 2.0 goals.
It also said agencies have not pursued "Government 2.0 in a co-ordinated way that reflects a whole of government position".
Burton has returned to Australia from the US, where he worked to similarly implement Gov2.0 practices. He will commence work at ACMA on February 1.
