TransAct rolls out VDSL2

CANBERRA-based ISP and phone company TransAct has become one of the first companies in the world to roll-out VDSL2 network technology, the fastest copper-based commercial technology available.

The VDSL2 (or very high-speed subscriber line2) is the latest DSL technology. TransAct says the system is up to four times as fast as its current ADSL2 technology, which is capable of theoretical speeds of 24Mbps.

The roll-out comes on the back of a series of investments in fibre to the home (FTTH) using GPON (or gigabit passive optical network,) infrastructure the company has made in new housing estates across the ACT.

TransAct is one of the companies bidding for a slice of the Federal Government’s $4.7 billion National Broadband Network (NBN), having put forward a proposal covering the ACT.

“Through this VDSL2 upgrade program and the rollout of FTTH to selected new suburbs, TransACT is heavily investing in Canberra to ensure that the broadband access we provide is first-class,” the company’s chief executive Ivan Slavich said.

“TransACT’s VDSL2 GPON network will offer superior speeds that will make downloading music, streaming television and interactive gaming much faster than any other broadband in the market,” Mr Slavich said.

The upgrade to VDSL2 has already been completed at The Avenue on Northbourne Avenue, Skyplaza in Woden and The Gateway at Kingston Foreshore, with additional sites to be upgraded by the end of June 2009.
