Emerging Technologies and Infrastructure Requirements for Cost-Effective Healthcare

Learn about next generation medical implant technologies

  • Cost of health care is a significant percentage of GDP in the developed countries and ageing population will create more demand
  • The creation of new IT tools will enable the implementation of quality systems in the practice of medicine which will improve outcomes and reduce costs
  • This is perhaps the greatest IT challenge to face the world. The procedures and data in healthcare are amongst the most complex
  • The NBN is a critical platform to enable the digital management of health care data
  • The management of patients with active implantable devices via the internet provides opportunities for better care but provides unique challenges in data security.

Dr John Parker
CTO, Implant Technologies, NICTA

Automation and Remote Operations in The Primary Sector

  • As a remote, sparsely populated, resourced rich country, Australia is the ideal place to automate
  • The past decade has seen substantial technical development and investment in field robotics
  • Examine case studies about technical advances in the areas of perception, large machine control, and systems engineering
  • Gain insight into how this progress in field robotics has led to significant commercial developments
  • Understand how such applications are controlled at a distance using wired and wireless infrastructure
  • Learn about how these opportunities will develop in the next decade

Prof Hugh Durrant-Whyte
Research Director, Australian Centre for Field Robotics

1.45pm - 2.05pm

Case Study Presentation: Water
Measuring up to improve water management in Australia: How the National Broadband Network can help

  • Water information improvements have been deemed a vital ingredient in national water reform, currently underpinned by an Australian Government investment of $12.9b over 10 years
  • The Australian Government has allocated $450m to the Bureau of Meteorology to transform the capture and utility value of water information
  • Hydrologic observing networks and communication systems are in urgent need of modernisation, and are operated by over 200 different agencies across the nation
  • Low cost but reliable, real-time transmission of data from widely distributed measurement arrays, including some in remote regions, is needed to make the step changes
  • The NBN has the potential to serve as a solid communications trunk infrastructure for relaying water and other environmental information

Dr Rob Vertessy
Deputy Director (Water), Bureau of Meteorology

Enabling Infrastructure for Scientific Grand Challenges

  • The paradigm for scientific research has shifted
  • Research is no longer confined by geographic and organisational boundaries: it is collaborative, multi-disciplinary, and increasingly ICT enabled
  • Across all disciplines, researchers are now working with massive data volumes
  • More computational power, greater communication bandwidth, improved data management and visualisation are required for them to undertake their research
  • This is needed to enable the next generation of scientific discovery

Dr Alex Zelinsky
Group Executive, Information Sciences, CSIRO

Exploring NBN Security & Privacy Issues

  • The NBN & ‘The Cloud' go hand in glove: one will not succeed without the other
  • Just as the Cloud and NBN will amplify the opportunities, so they will amplify the risks: this realisation and what to do about it is only dawning right now worldwide
  • Crucial to uptake will be identity management that is user centric and user controlled but also contributes to responsibility and accountability by ALL parties: individuals, business and government
  • Will Australia lead or lag in developing and deploying these vital parts of the infrastructure?

Malcolm Crompton
Managing Director, Information Integrity Solutions Pty Ltd
